New research indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
